I wasn’t actually planning to post anything tonight, I really wasn’t.
I’ve driven 800 miles in the past two days, forging ahead through pounding rainstorms and a coating of tar that some doof decided to dump all over the Pennsylvania Turnpike. As such, I figured I was due a couple days off from my non-paying blog job.
Then, while I was sitting on my brother-in-law’s sofa all unsuspecting, ESPN showed an update from the final moments in Tucson. Chase Tapley with the dagger 3. Final score: 61-57 Aztecs.
Hey man, you mind if I borrow your computer for a sec?
So here I am, blogging after having seen nothing more than Tapley being a clutch-ass pimp and Jamaal Franklin wearing a mask that makes him look like Jimmy Darmody’s sidekick in 1920s Atlantic City.
But I didn’t have to see the entire win to know what it meant: that was this year’s Gonzaga game times 10. SDSU has beaten Arizona before, recently even. But a ranked Arizona? At Arizona?
The Aztecs just served notice that, barring injury, this will be no down year.
We’re now smack in the middle of the most brutal nonconference stretch in the history of the program — one we all knew would make or break the season and the Aztecs’ tournament resume. I thought surviving with a 4-3 record in this part of the schedule would be a coup. SDSU now stands at 3-0 (6-1 overall) and has a pretty good shot at a top-25 ranking next week if it can silence all those kinda-long-haired, Jason Mraz-listening bros at the Thunderdome on Saturday.
Yeah, I just said top-25.
This team is no longer rebuilding. It’s just good. Adjust your narratives accordingly.
Happy Thanksgiving, indeed.
This is the kind of win that looks very impressive come Selection Sunday.
This win was very impressive.
You’re right about the Gonzaga win last year. Gozaga was a better team than this Arizona group but I bet this win resounds more with the media and the public.
